Memory and memory sync
Kenaz, a Kameas AI product.
Memories are stored on this device. They are sent to Kameas only if you turn on memory sync for your Kameas Fleet account (off by default), and never as telemetry. When your AI tool uses a memory in a session, it becomes part of that session and is sent to your AI tool's provider (for example Anthropic for Claude Code, or OpenAI for Codex) like anything else in the conversation.
How memory works
Kenaz memory gives Claude Code and Codex a small notebook on your device.
Your agent saves short notes (facts, decisions, conventions and fixes) with the memory_save tool, finds them again with memory_search, memory_get and memory_recent, and changes or deletes them with memory_update, memory_forget and memory_forget_all.
Search is by keyword, on this device.
At the start of each session, your agent gets a short index of the newest note titles for the current project: titles and ids only, never note bodies.
Memory works whether or not you're signed in, and your telemetry choices don't affect it. It's on by default.
- Where: in files under the Kenaz state directory, readable only by you.
Notes saved while you're signed out go to the device notebook (
kenaz memory pathprints where it is). Everyone who uses the same OS account sees the device notebook. Notes saved while you're signed in go to a separate store for that Kameas Fleet account, which your agent sees only while that account is signed in. - Limits: a note is up to 8 KiB with a 200-character title; each store holds up to 2,000 notes or 16 MiB. When a store is full, nothing is deleted automatically.
- Credentials:
memory_saverefuses text that obviously contains a credential, such as an API key, access token or private key. This is a basic check, not a scanner: never ask your agent to save secrets or personal data. - Approval while signed in: every memory change for your signed-in account waits for your approval when it would reach Kameas Fleet. Signed out, the device notebook needs no approval.
Your controls
kenaz memory list [--project current|all] [--limit N]
kenaz memory search <query> [--project current|all] [--limit N]
kenaz memory show <id>
kenaz memory update <id> [--title T] [--body B] [--tags a,b]
kenaz memory forget <id>
kenaz memory revert <id> undo a refused edit, or a deletion waiting for approval
kenaz memory export every note of this account and device, as NDJSON
kenaz memory forget-all delete every note of the signed-in account, here and
in Kameas Fleet (needs approval on the approval page)
kenaz memory purge [--yes] delete the device notebook (signed-out notes)
kenaz memory path print the device notebook's location
kenaz memory enable | disable turn memory on or off (default on)
kenaz memory disable stops the memory tools and the session index, and keeps your notes.
kenaz status and kenaz doctor show whether memory is on, how many notes it holds and whether sync is on.
Delete your notes
- One note:
kenaz memory forget <id>. While you're signed in, this waits for your approval, and the note is hidden until you approve;kenaz memory revert <id>shows it again. - The device notebook (notes saved while signed out):
kenaz memory purge. - All notes of your account, on this device and in Kameas Fleet:
kenaz memory forget-all, while signed in to that account. It needs your approval. This also erases your account's notes on your other devices when they next connect, including notes there that hadn't been synced yet. Notes that belong to a single project are kept.forget-allalways erases your account's notes in Kameas Fleet, even if you never turned on sync on this device.
kenaz logout and kenaz setup --undo keep your memory on this device.
To remove it before you uninstall, use the commands above.
Memory sync
Memory sync copies the notes of your Kameas Fleet account to that account, so your other enrolled devices get them. It needs an official build, a plan that includes memory sync, and your sign-in. It's off until you turn it on, and it's separate from telemetry: turning one on or off never changes the other.
Turn it on
kenaz memory sync enable
This shows the Memory Sync Notice (quoted below), then opens the approval page, where the notice is shown again and you approve with your security key or device unlock.
If no authenticator is set up, turning on sync is refused with approval_unavailable: run kenaz approvals enroll first.
Turning on sync uploads exactly the notes listed on the approval page.
Memory sync
When you turn on memory sync, Kenaz copies the memory notes saved under your Kameas Fleet account on this device to that account, and keeps your other enrolled devices up to date. It is off until you turn it on.
What is sent, for each synced note:
- the note's text and title, a fingerprint (SHA-256) of the text, when it was created, which tool saved it (Claude Code […], Codex […] or the Kenaz CLI), and change timestamps that keep edits in order;
- your edits and deletions of synced notes.
What is not sent: notes saved while you were signed out (unless you move them into your account with
kenaz memory sync adopt), notes that belong to a single project, note tags, local file paths, and anything from telemetry. A note that looks like it contains a credential stays on this device.Who can see it: only you, signed in to your own account. Kameas Fleet has no administrator, team or staff view of it, and it is never shared with a team.
Keeping and deleting: synced notes stay in your account until you delete them. Turning sync off stops sending new notes but does not delete what was already synced. Delete one note with
kenaz memory forget <id>, or everything withkenaz memory forget-all, which erases your account's notes in Kameas Fleet, on this device, and on your other devices when they next connect, including notes there that had not been synced yet. Notes that belong to a single project are kept. If your organization's plan stops including memory sync, Kameas Fleet keeps synced notes for 90 days and then deletes them.Memory sync is separate from telemetry: turning one on or off does not change the other.
When your AI tool uses a note in a session, the note becomes part of that session and is sent to the tool's AI provider like the rest of the conversation.
Only notes saved for all projects are synced; notes that belong to one project stay on this device.
Sync commands
kenaz memory sync status is memory sync on, and what is queued
kenaz memory sync enable turn on sync to your Kameas Fleet account (needs approval)
kenaz memory sync disable stop syncing (synced notes stay until deleted)
kenaz memory sync approve ask to send changes that wait for your approval
kenaz memory sync adopt <id>... | --all
move signed-out notes into your account so they sync
kenaz memory sync status (or the memory_sync_status tool) shows what is synced, queued, waiting for your approval, on this device only, or refused, and why.
Approving changes in batches
While sync is on, saving, editing and deleting a synced note each wait for your approval.
If no approval is possible at the moment (no authenticator set up, or the relay isn't running), saves and edits still apply on this device, and their upload waits until you run kenaz memory sync approve and approve it.
A new text never reuses an approval you gave for an earlier one.
One approval lists at most 64 notes, each with its full text.
With more, kenaz memory sync approve (or kenaz memory sync adopt --all) asks you to approve the first 64 and says how many remain; run it again after approving to review the next batch.
Turn it off and delete synced notes
kenaz memory sync disablestops sending new notes. Notes already synced stay in your account.kenaz memory forget <id>deletes one note, and the deletion is still sent while sync is off.kenaz memory forget-allerases your account's notes in Kameas Fleet, on this device, and on your other devices when they next connect, including notes there that hadn't been synced yet.
Both deletions need your approval.
